What does PVB mean in PHYSIOLOGY

PVB stands for Premature Ventricular Beat, which is an extra heartbeat that occurs before the normal rhythm of the heart returns. It can result from either the upper chambers (atria) or lower chambers (ventricles) of the heart.

Symptoms associated with PVB may include skipped beats, extra beats, a feeling of fluttering in the chest, and a racing heartbeat. Other symptoms may include dizziness, shortness of breath, fatigue, and lightheadedness.

People with certain underlying medical conditions such as high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, and diabetes are at higher risk for developing PVB. Additionally, people who consume large amounts of caffeine or nicotine are also more vulnerable to this condition.

A doctor will typically diagnose PVBs through an electrocardiogram (EKG), which records electrical activity in the heart to detect any abnormal rhythms caused by premature ventricular contractions. If further tests are required doctors may order measurements such as echocardiograms and stress tests to confirm diagnosis and assess any underlying cause.

Treatment for PVM depends on factors such as severity and underlying causes such as other medical conditions that might be contributing to this condition. Generally speaking, lifestyle modifications such as reducing stress levels and avoiding caffeine/nicotine are recommended since they can help reduce occurrence of premature beats in some individuals with mild cases of PVBs. Medications may also be prescribed if needed to stabilize arrhythmias or reduce risk factors behind them.
