District History

PSRC is the seventh largest school district in North Carolina and was established in 1960 with its main office located in Lumberton City. The district formed after Robeson County schools were consolidated during a period of significant population growth. In 1969-1970 it was decided to divide the county into two districts–Public Schools of Robeson County (PSRC) and private schools operated by Lumbee Regional Development Association (LRDA). PSRC operates as an independent, publicly funded system throughout the county municipalities except for LRDA’s five tribal schools (Rowland Elementary School, Pembroke Elementary School, Proctorville Elementary School, Red Springs High School, and St Pauls High School). Over the past few decades there have been various efforts implemented to improve education quality by expanding curriculum and innovative teaching programs in order to better prepare students for college or career opportunities after high school graduation.

The mission of PSRC is “to equip every student with the necessary knowledge and skills to become successful citizens who will make positive contributions to society”. As such they strive “to create a culture that embraces excellence through collaboration” with respect being given “to diversity thoughts ideas beliefs backgrounds opinions cultures religion gender expression sexual orientation socioeconomic status political beliefs et cetera” as part of creating an atmosphere conducive for learning.
