What Does PSG Mean?

The Professional Student Government (PSG) is an organization composed of elected or appointed representatives from each college or university who work together to represent the students' collective best interests and advocate on their behalf at the institutional level. The goal of PSG is to promote student engagement, leadership development, and communication between students and faculty/administration. Depending on their qualifications and structure, some Professional Student Governments may be recognized as official organizations by their school’s administration. Through working with administrators, faculty members, staff members, alumni/ae, governing board members and other student leaders, PSGs are able to lobby for changes in policies that improve the educational experience of all students at the school.

What is the Role of a Member?

Members of Professional Student Governments have a variety of roles including monitoring legislative actions on campus that affect students; researching issues that impact student life; connecting with other organizations both on campus and off; meeting with faculty/staff/administrators to discuss student concerns; assisting in planning events such as commencements; running large-scale initiatives which benefit the entire school community; developing new clubs or initiatives which provide additional programming opportunities for students; informing fellow peers about important dates/events/deadlines via active social media use; representing their individual college or university at conferences and summits focused on improving higher education experiences nationwide; advocating for change based on the diverse needs and opinions of all students at their institution through lobbying efforts; drafting policies related to student affairs; overseeing elections relating to Student Union positions; holding town hall meetings where they help create ideas which will benefit student life through increased engagement in topics such as mental health & wellness. In addition to these responsibilities, Professional Student Government Members serve vital roles within their respective institutions by serving as liaisons between fellow peers and administrative staff or representatives from governing boards.
