What does PPU mean in UNIONS

The Peace Pledge Union is a British pacifist organisation established in 1934. It promotes non-violent approaches to conflict resolution and campaigns for the abolition of weapons of mass destruction. It works to raise awareness of thecosts of war, and works for an alternative vision based on justice, equality and human rights.

The Peace Pledge Union believe that war is not an acceptable means of resolving disputes and that violence only creates more suffering. We also believe in disarmament - reducing military spending and actively working for nuclear disarmament, as well as opposing all forms of weapons proliferation. We promote dialogue and unarmed peacebuilding as alternatives to armed conflict. In this way, we aim to foster more just and equitable societies which respect human rights and international law.

Currently we are running campaigns such as ‘Don’t Bomb Syria’, 'Opposition to Trident', 'Zero Nuclear Weapons' and 'Ending War Together'. No, The PPU opposes all forms of military intervention abroad which seek to project power by imposing systems from outside regardless of whether these interventions have been justified on humanitarian grounds. We believe there are always alternatives to armed intervention such as diplomatic initiatives, economic measures and other peaceful strategies such as restorative justice models which should be considered first before resorting to violence.

The PPU firmly believes in pursuing non-violent solutions when it comes to tackling terrorist activities both at home and abroad. We oppose blanket condemnation of communities associated with terrorism out of fear or ignorance; instead we stand for tolerance between people from different cultural backgrounds believing that mutual understanding brings greater stability than hatred or prejudice.
