What does PMH mean in PSYCHIATRY

Psychiatric Mental Health (PMH).

PMH nurses provide a wide range of services and interventions, including diagnosis, treatment, management, and preventative care for patients with mental health challenges.

To become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse (PMH), one must first obtain an appropriate degree in nursing such as a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing plus other specialized training related to mental health conditions. In addition, they must also be licensed as a Registered Nurse by their state board of nursing.

The role of the PMH nurse is unique in that it focuses specifically on providing support for those with mental health conditions. Their focus is on improving quality of life through providing assessments, psychological interventions such as individual therapy or group therapy sessions, medication management and more. It requires more than just knowledge about medication but also understanding psychological theories such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Humanistic Therapy in order to better understand patients' needs and develop appropriate treatment plans.

A PMH nurse may perform many tasks such as assessing patient's needs by conducting interviews; interviewing family members; assessing records or reports submitted by medical personnel; administering medications; providing psychotherapy; conducting group therapy sessions; evaluating test results; educating families about illness and its treatment options; making referrals for further evaluation or treatments; coordinating with social workers for follow-up care instructions.
