What does PLN mean in VETERINARY

PLN is caused by damage or injury to the glomeruli, which are tiny structures in the kidneys that play an important role in filtering proteins, fluids and waste products from the blood. Damage to this area can cause proteins to be lost into the urine instead of being reabsorbed back into circulation. Certain genetic mutations and diseases such as lupus nephritis may also increase a person's risk for developing PLN.

Common symptoms associated with PLN include swelling of hands, feet and face, loss of appetite, fatigue, anemia, decreased urine output and weight loss. In more severe cases, people may experience difficulty breathing due to fluid buildup in the lungs or chest pain due to heart enlargement.

In order to diagnose PLN, a healthcare professional should perform a physical exam and order tests such as urine tests and blood tests. These tests will measure levels of specific proteins in order to detect any abnormalities that could indicate kidney damage or disease. A biopsy may also be performed if more information is needed about what is causing proteinuria (protein in urine).

The treatment for PLN depends on factors such as severity of symptoms and underlying cause(s). Treatment options may include medications to reduce inflammation or ease symptoms; dialysis or other treatments for kidney failure; lifestyle changes like limiting salt intake; dietary modifications; vitamin supplements; or surgery if needed.

Complications associated with PLN can be serious and even lead to death if not managed properly. These may include infection due to weakened immunity, electrolyte imbalances due to lack of protein absorption from food intake, increased risk for heart failure due to fluid accumulation around the heart or abdomen distress due to ascites (fluid built up) around organs resulting in pain/discomfort.
