Background

PISCES was founded after the adoption of the Small-Island Developing States (SIDS) Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway, which aims to address challenges faced by small island states through integrated and sustainable solutions. Since then, PISCES has been working with governments across the Pacific region in order to enhance collective resilience of its members. To do this, it develops strategies that promote sustainable development, finance programs in areas including food security, water security, renewable energy sources, ocean governance and coastal management. In addition to these activities, PISCES also works with various stakeholders including other regional organizations such as the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), research institutions, and private sector entities such as banks and insurance companies. These collaborations are key in order for PISCES to achieve its goals of promoting long-term economic growth and stability while caring for its environment given the region’s vulnerability due to climate change.

Objectives

The primary objective of PISCES is to foster economic growth through providing technical assistance tailored specifically for small island states needs taking into consideration their unique characteristics such as limited access to capital markets or structural constraints imposed upon them due to their geographical isolation. To do this it designs programs which build up human capital resources, encourages investments in infrastructure, promotes better business practices that create jobs, increases access to finance through debt restructuring methods or grants, helps countries transition from aid-dependence towards a more self-sufficient economy, and developing public policies which are aligned with developmental targets set by Sustainable Development Goals established by UN.
