What does PICO mean in NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS

PICO stands for Pacific Institute for Community Organization. It is a national network of faith-based and nonprofit organizations working to build power and advocate for justice in low-income communities. PICO helps to strengthen the capacity of communities to organize and to understand their rights, develop effective strategies, secure public policies that support families with low incomes, and provide quality services that protect children and improve community health.

PICO works to build the power of underrepresented and underserved individuals in order create broad-based social change through direct action, advocacy, capacity building and civic engagement. At both a local level and nationally, PICO is known for its powerful organizing strategies and campaigns that promote social justice through civil disobedience, policy advocacy, grassroots empowerment, issue education campaigns and coalition building initiatives.

Through local member organizations across the United States (and now Latin America), PICO serves as a platform for individuals in need of civic engagement within their respective communities by providing resources & guidance towards developing successful mobilizations in concert with additional support from other community partners. Each project implemented by a local organization is strategically designed around common objectives developed collaboratively with direct participation from targeted populations who are actively engaged throughout all aspects of the process. This process allows for solutions to be tailored to each unique population served while providing an opportunity for voice among those facing oppression or any other form of injustice.

Over the years PICO has seen victories ranging from statewide victory in California on disabilities rights legislation to a successful campaign against predatory lending practices in more than 30 cities across the country. More recently they have worked on promoting health care reform advocating for greater access to affordable healthcare; fostering family economic stability through expanding access to public benefits such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) programs; fighting drug convictions; debt relief initiatives; food security campaigns; immigration reform initiatives; employment equality campaigns; tenant organizing efforts; fair housing reforms affecting people with criminal records; voting rights initiatives; safe school environments; anti-violence projects on streets & campuses internationally
