What does PHN mean in NURSING

Public Health Nursing (PHN) is a type of nursing that focuses on promoting public health and preventing health problems. PHN nurses work to educate individuals, families, and communities about health topics and risks so that they can make decisions that will improve their health. They also connect patients with resources such as counseling or treatment services.

The responsibilities of a PHN nurse include educating the public about health-related topics, connecting people with resources for care, conducting assessments to identify community issues around physical or mental wellbeing, providing case management services such as treating illnesses or addressing risk factors for disease, developing plans of care for individual clients based on community needs assessment results, advocating for policies to reduce inequalities in access to healthcare services, collaborating with multiple stakeholders in order to improve care quality in the community setting, assessing needs regularly within the community setting in order to ensure adequate healthcare provision levels are being met.

In order to become a PHN nurse, you must have completed an accredited program in nursing at the undergraduate level or higher. In addition to this qualification you need experience working with relevant populations in either direct care or clinical settings. You may also be required to possess advanced certification specializing in maternal/child and family nursing practice such as certified nurse midwife (CNM), certified registered nurse practitioner (CRNP) or equivalent experience.

Public Health Nursing (PHN) differs from traditional hospital-based nursing mainly due to its focus on disease prevention rather than curative measures; where hospital-based persons are focused on acute patient care while public health nurses work within communities towards promoting healthy environments by raising awareness and providing advice through education initiatives. PHN also refers more towards minor primary care activities as well as long-term chronic condition management which would otherwise be not possible within hospital settings.
