What does PHA mean in MEDICAL

A PHA is a Post-development Health Assessment, which is conducted to identify potential public health issues associated with a development project and its potential impacts on community health. It also helps inform decision makers of what preventive measures may be necessary.

Generally, PHAs are conducted by an organization or collection of organizations such as research firms in order to assess public health risks associated with development projects.

PHAs are typically conducted before the start of a development project and after it has been completed. They can also be conducted in the case of existing developments if there have been changes made since their last assessment.

PHAs assess possible risks to public health from physical hazards such as air pollution, noise pollution, water contamination, and radiation exposure; biological hazards such as microorganisms and allergens; chemical hazards such as acids or metals; and psycho-social hazards such as stress from long commutes or crowded living conditions.

In the event that elevated risk levels for certain dangers are identified following a PHA assessment, strategies should be implemented in order to address them. These strategies may include enhanced safety measures for workers at the site or surrounding communities; additional environmental monitoring plans; improved access mechanisms for getting help if needed; and other measures depending on the specifics of the situation.
