Meaning

PCH is an acronym that stands for Palacios, Honduras. It refers to a small municipality located in Colón Department, South Caribbean region of Honduras. Its population is around 10 thousand people and it has an area of 34 km2 (about 13 square miles). The main economic activities are agriculture and fishing. Some of the most popular products produced here are sugar cane, bananas, rice and coffee beans. The city also offers various recreational opportunities such as eco-tourism, cultural events, and sporting activities like football (soccer) and surfing.

History

Palacios has a long history going back to 1600s when Alonso de Ojeda founded it as San Pablo de Palacios del Gobernador Nuño Velasco on 24th February 1606. Although it was initially under Spanish rule, towards the late 19th century it had already become part of the independent Republic of Honduras. During World War II, Palacios was chosen as one of the first American air bases out of which U.S forces helped protect British troops from German submarines patrolling nearby waters. Later on in 1982 Palacios experience Hurricane Alicia – one of worst natural disasters ever recorded in Honduran history. This event caused severe damage to local infrastructure but thankfully its citizens managed to rebuild their town quickly afterwards.

Economy

Palacios’ economy relies heavily on agriculture with some help from fishing industries too – mainly due to favorable weather conditions prevailing throughout most parts year round. The primary crops grown here include sugar cane, bananas (which account for 70% total exports), rice and coffee beans amongst others which allows this small municipality significant financial competitiveness within Honduran markets even though only 15% land is used productively across whole country's coastal zone. In other words PCH contributes significantly towards national GDP while at same time allowing its citizens regular access fresh food supplies needed survive.
