What does ASWA mean in CAREER

The mission of ASWA is to promote the rights, safety and health of African sex workers through advocacy, policy reform, resource mobilization, capacity building, awareness raising and networking.

ASWA's members include organizations and networks that support and champion the rights of African sex workers. These include national federations with a network across different regions in Africa, local grassroots organizations working directly with sex workers in their communities as well as allies from across civil society who represent interests aligned with those of African sex workers.

ASWA's activities involve advocating for legal reforms that protect sex worker's rights; providing resources to increase access to health services; conducting social media campaigns to raise visibility around issues affecting African sex workers; creating safe spaces for dialogue around violence against women; engaging in research projects to better understand the needs of Africans affected by HIV/AIDS; offering training workshops on sexual health education; hosting conferences related to gender-based violence; developing links between national leaders involved in HIV/AIDS programming in Africa; facilitating dialogue amongst stakeholders aimed at transforming attitudes towards sexual diversity on the continent; and networking with other regional bodies that share similar goals.

Rights based approaches refer to an understanding that individuals should be enabled to exercise their human rights along with full participation into decision making processes which affect them. This could involve gaining greater autonomy within family life or having access to services such as healthcare or legal protection systems when they experience violence or discrimination. Ultimately it seeks to create an environment where individuals can feel free from fear so that they can attain respect & equality within society regardless of their identity & socio economic status.
