History
The history of ABB can be traced back to 1898 when an interurban railway company connected Barberton and Akron using trolleys. Originally known as the Barberton Speedway Railway Company, the railroad changed its name to the Akron & Barberton Belt Line in 1900 after a merger with several other local railroads. The railroad continued to expand over the ensuing decades, connecting with several major railroads such as Erie Railroad and Baltimore & Ohio Railroad as well as constructing new spurs and sidings to serve various industrial customers around Akron and Barberton. By 1970, ABB had developed into a full-fledged Class III freight line that was used heavily by steel mills in Northeastern Ohio for transporting raw material shipments.
Current Operations
Today ABB runs on a total of 34 miles of track between Akron and Doylestown (in Wayne County) while serving numerous customers along the way. The primary commodities shipped via ABB include chemicals (including sulfuric acid), livestock feed, grain products (such as corn syrup), steel mill products (mainly steel coils), aggregates (limestone) and miscellaneous items such as plastic pellets that are delivered in containers or gondolas. On average about 14 trains operate per week on the railroad’s tracks carrying these goods from northeast Ohio out to points beyond including Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and Michigan.
