What does ASTP mean in TRANSPORTATION

The Advanced Space Transportation Program (ASTP) is a joint venture between private industry, government agencies and research institutions to develop the next generation of advanced space transportation systems. Its mission is to advance the space economy by providing safe, reliable and cost-effective access to space for personnel, cargo and scientific instruments.

ASTP provides a broad range of benefits to its participants. It enhances safety by applying rigorous standards for system development and operations, increases affordability through cost-sharing initiatives, drives technological advances in spacecraft design and propulsion systems, accelerates time-to-market with a coordinated program management approach, strengthens collaboration between public and private stakeholders, and offers new opportunities for commercial payloads.

ASTP presently consists of more than 30 members from across many sectors including aerospace companies such as Boeing or SpaceX; educational institutes such as MIT or CalTech; defense contractors including Lockheed Martin; industry experts such as Aerojet Rocketdyne; space agencies like NASA and ESA; satellite communications providers such Intelsat or Inmarsat; start-ups focused on disruptive technologies like Rocket Lab or Relativity Space; finance firms like Goldman Sachs or Credit Suisse; insurance underwriters like AIG and Lloyds of London; launch providers including ULA or Intelsat General Corp.; engineering consultants such as Jacobs Engineering Group Inc.; regulatory bodies like FAA or FCC.

Costs associated with joining ASTP vary depending on each member’s commitment level in terms of resources provided including technology expertise, capital investments, marketing investments etc. Each member must also demonstrate their ability to fulfil their responsibilities outlined in their participation agreement.

Prospective members must commit resources such as personnel, money and technology expertise that will help facilitate successful completion of the goals outlined in ASTPs mission statement. Additionally members must demonstrate their commitment to innovation through contributions related to one or more focus areas within the program which include but are not limited to safety assurance, cost reduction strategies, advanced propulsion technologies etc.

The aim of ASTP is to enable cheaper access to space by developing a combination of innovative technologies centered around reusability (of launch vehicles), additive manufacturing (3D printing), smarter propulsion systems (electric/hybrid) and automation which could all make missions safer while reducing costs.

At its core an efficient space transportation system allows us greater efficiency when moving materials into orbit from Earth at lower costs when compared with traditional methods – be it satellite deployment for communication purposes, delivering supplies to astronauts aboard an orbiting platform or conducting scientific experiments too dangerous/difficult/expensive to perform on Earth’s surface – thereby extending our reach beyond what was previously possible allowing us to better understand our universe while making life here on earth more sustainable.

Advancements made through ASSP seek out ways that can reduce costs while increasing safety when launching any given payload into orbit using reusable rocketry solutions (Reduce cost), smarter satellites with shorter deployment times due reduced mass & faster assembly rates enabled via 3D printing(Reduce weight & time) & electric propulsion systems (increase efficiency). This opens up possibilities that would otherwise remain unexplored due prohibitively high launch costs associated with conventional launchers.
