What does ASSI mean in UNCLASSIFIED

An Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI) is a designated area of land in the United Kingdom which has been identified as having a particular importance for nature conservation. These areas provide protection for some of the UK’s most threatened habitats and species.

Sites are chosen based on their scientific importance, usually using criteria developed by environmental bodies and conservation groups. Areas that hold particularly rare or endangered species or habitats are often targeted, as well as sites that provide important resources such as food or shelter for native wildlife.

The responsibility for protecting and managing the Areas of Special Scientific Interest lies with various government agencies, such as Natural England and Scottish Natural Heritage in England and Wales respectively. Local authorities, cycling groups and other organisations also play a role in ensuring that ASSIs are protected.

Activities permitted in designated Areas of Special Scientific Interest vary depending on the site itself and its designated purpose but generally include low-impact recreation such as walking, cycling, horse riding and birdwatching along with educational activities such as conservation work days.

Generally yes; activities which could cause damage to the local environment, disturb wildlife or interfere with scientific research should be avoided. Any activity outside that requires special permission from one of the responsible organisations such as Natural England or Scottish Natural Heritage must also obtain prior approval before it can take place.

It is generally not possible to obtain planning permission to build a dwelling within an Area of Special Scientific Interest due to its protected status; however if you own part or all of the land it may be possible to gain permission by obtaining special consent from one of the responsible organisations.
