What does ORT mean in VETERINARY

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) is a gram-negative bacteria which has been known to cause respiratory disease in poultry. It is also known as avian pneumonic pasteurellosis.

Symptoms associated with ORT infection include coughing, sneezing, gasping, laboured breathing and rales. In some cases it can result in death from respiratory failure.

The ORT is mainly spread through direct contact between infected and uninfected birds by aerosolisation of secretions from the infected birds or through contaminated water or feed sources.

To help protect your flock from an ORT infection you should practice good biosecurity measures such as isolating new birds for a period of time before introducing them into your existing flock, limiting contact with other bird populations and thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting equipment used to move birds between different areas on your farm. Additionally, it's important to use good hygiene practices when handling poultry and their excretions and keeping the living environment clean and free from any form of contamination.

Yes there are several vaccines available for prevention against ORT infection however they may not provide complete protection against all strains so regular testing of flocks should be undertaken if ORT is suspected in order to ensure correct diagnosis and optimal treatment for affected birds.
