The Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) is a developmental screening tool designed to help identify children between the ages of one month and five years of age who may be at risk for delays in their development. It is comprised of questions which assess an infant’s or young child’s performance across various developmental domains such as cognitive, language, physical, social-emotional, and self-help.

The ASQ is typically administered by health care professionals such as pediatricians, public health nurses, early interventionists, and other experienced clinicians.

This score along with additional information gathered will then be reviewed by a healthcare professional in order to develop individualized recommendations for further evaluation or intervention if necessary.

If your child receives a “fail” score on their initial ASQ assessment it does not mean that he/she necessarily has a delay; rather it means that there are discrepancies between what was expected at his/her current age vs what was seen at time of screening. This discrepancy indicates areas requiring further exploration through additional testing/observation in order to determine whether there indeed is any type of delay present.
