What does ONAP mean in HEALTHCARE

The Office of National AIDS Policy (ONAP) is a division of the Executive Office of the President that works to develop comprehensive policies and initiatives to prevent HIV infection, provide care, support those living with HIV, reduce HIV-related disparities and health inequities, and improve access to quality health care for people living with HIV.

ONAP works in collaboration with partners across the federal government and other stakeholders to create a national vision for responding to the HIV epidemic in the United States. This includes developing evidence-based policy recommendations, providing technical assistance, disseminating information and resources, convening stakeholder groups, and monitoring progress toward achieving goals.

ONAP has undertaken a number of initiatives including creating the first ever U.S. National HIV/AIDS Strategy in 2010; convening stakeholder engagement sessions between 2011-2013 to identify key issues confronting people living with HIV or at risk for acquisition; producing “HIV Care Continuum” research documents detailing strategies for reducing new infections; launching “Bending the Curve” campaigns intended to push states to implement strategies that will reduce new diagnoses; supporting the development of new drug therapies with improved safety profiles; sponsoring public awareness campaigns addressing stigma and discrimination related to HIV/AIDS; and launching innovative programs such as ONAP's "Let's Stop HIV Together" campaign meant to engage communities around preventing new transmissions.

By working together on policies that improve access to quality healthcare, reduce stigma against those living with HIV/AIDS, address health disparities within populations disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS, we all benefit from healthier communities where individuals can reach their full potential.

Let's Stop HIV Together (LSHT) is an initiative developed by ONAP aimed at mobilizing communities across America to raise awareness about ending new transmissions of HIV through testing, treatment adherence, condom use and partner services. The campaign features social media tools — including videos featuring celebrities — meant to engage young people particularly vulnerable populations most affected by rising rates of infection or transmission.
