What does OIS mean in HOSPITALS

OIS stands for Optical Intrinsic Signal, which refers to changes in light that occur naturally within the brain when neurons fire and release neurotransmitters. This can be measured through optical imaging techniques, such as fluorescence microscopy and/or multiphoton imaging.

OIS measures changes in light intensity which correspond to electrical signals generated by neurons firing when they release neurotransmitters. This allows researchers to observe neuronal activity with high temporal and spatial resolution.

Unlike other methods, OIS does not require placing electrodes directly onto the brain or stimulating it with external stimuli, making it a less invasive technique for studying neural activity. Additionally, its ability to measure both temporal and spatial information gives researchers an unprecedented level of detail about what's happening inside the brain at a given moment.
