What does OIJ mean in UNCLASSIFIED

Organisation Internationale des Journalistes (OIJ) is an international non-governmental organization dedicated to protecting and strengthening freedom of expression, freedom of information and press freedom – the very values that make journalism possible. It works for social justice, democratic governance and citizens’ rights. OIJ is a global network of journalists, broadcasters and other media professionals working together to promote media freedom and foster constructive dialogue between the media industry and civil society.

OIJ’s vision for a free press includes respect for human rights, open dialogue among stakeholders from all aspects of society, quality journalism produced in an ethical manner, diversity of opinions, and independent news sources. The Organization stands by its commitment to press freedom, social accountability, equal opportunity for everyone in the media sector, diversity in reporting styles as well as sources of news, and gender equality in the workplace.

OIJ undertakes a range of activities which aim to strengthen press freedom worldwide. These activities include research into topics such as media censorship, advocacy campaigns focused on legal reforms needed to protect journalists and their work, workshops held in various countries to provide legal support for journalists facing persecution or harassment for doing their jobs professionally, capacity building initiatives aimed at providing support to local journalism organizations around the world as well as support for networks that bring together grassroots organizations advancing press freedoms globally.

OIJ recognizes that threats against journalists come in many forms including physical injury or death, legal threats or criminal charges related to their work, surveillance or cyberattacks designed to weaken journalistic inquiry when it might affect powerful interests adversely or embarrass governments. The Organization works with governments around the world to implement laws and policies that protect journalists from such threats while also advocating on behalf of persecuted individuals who may face imprisonment or worse. Additionally, OIJ provides direct assistance when necessary through our emergency response hotline which can be used by any journalist facing imminent danger anywhere in the world.

The Organization welcomes any individual or organization interested in promoting peace through press freedom worldwide. This includes professional writers and editors employed at large publications; freelance journalists working independently; members of civil society organizations concerned about access to free information; academics researching how information shapes societies; citizens actively engaged with monitoring public discourse;and seemingly anyone else interested in engaging with issues pertaining to press freedoms globally.
