Operation Allied Force (OAF)

The NATO-led OAF had two main objectives: To restore peace and security in Kosovo, and to preserve regional stability through international security operations. In order for both objectives to be met, NATO needed to degrade Yugoslav forces through precision bombing attacks intended to weaken their capacity for mass destruction and limit their access to resources such as fuel, ammunition, personnel and information systems. Consequently, on March 24th 1999, an intense air campaign was initiated with frontal attacks on military barracks, logistical centers, communications centres and other important assets located within FRY territory. This was done in combination with tactical strikes on radar nodes and early warning systems that had been deployed along Serbian borders in order to protect Serbia’s airspace from intrusion.

Consequences & Legacy

The overall goal of OAF – a peaceful resolution between all parties involved - was not fully realized due to the efforts of Russia's diplomatic intervention which brokered peace talks between Belgrade and Pristina at Rambouillet Castle near Paris in February 1999. Nevertheless, despite limited success in achieving this overarching objective due largely to political factors outside of its control, OAF succeeded in diminishing Yugoslav forces’ capability for mass destruction while limiting access to resources they needed for mobilization against NATO interventions. Subsequently it also led directly to United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 (1999), which provided protection for minority groups within Kosovo while simultaneously enabling regional stability – both outcomes hoped for originally by the NATO-led mission.
