History
The history behind NYCFC is an incredibly unique one that began long before its inaugural season in 2015. The idea for a fifth MLS team to be located in New York City was first conceived back in 2007 when Manchester City FC and the New York Yankees announced plans to team up to create a 20th MLS club. Back then, however, things did not work out due to various legal issues and NYCFC was only officially created 6 years later when Manchester City purchased expansion rights directly from MLS commissioner Don Garber in 2013.
Popularity & Growth
Since then, NYCFC has rapidly increased its popularity amongst New Yorkers - both die-hard soccer fans and casual ones alike - and has seen significant success on the field since their inaugural season. During that first year in 2015, under head coach Jason Kreis, NYCFC reached playoff contention for the first time losing against eventual champions Columbus Crew SC away from home. Since 2015, NYCFC has continued to reach new heights both at home and abroad by reaching the playoffs every year up until 2019 where they lost out on a spot after losing two consecutive matches towards the end of the regular season.
