What Is NVM?

NVM or Non-Volatile Memory is a type of computer memory that can retain its data even when it loses power. Unlike volatile memory such as Random Access Memory (RAM) that needs constant voltage to maintain the stored data, NVM can still hold the stored data without any external power source applied. Some of the most common types of non-volatile memory used today include flash memory, ROM, EPROMs and magnetic storage devices such as hard disks.

Advantages Of NVM

One major advantage of NVM over RAM is its ability to retain information after loss of power unlike RAM which loses all stored data once power is cut off. Other advantages include but are not limited to its durability and low cost per bit compared to RAM, high densities that allow for large amounts of storage in small spaces, better stability at higher temperatures and lower susceptibility to radiation than some other types of semiconductor memories. In addition, because it does not require refreshing like DRAMs do, NVM has much lower latency which makes it great for high frequency transactional applications such as databases or financial services tools where latency matters greatly.

Applications Of NVM

Non Volatile Memory has found numerous applications in the tech industry in recent years ranging from enterprise storage solutions to consumer end products. In enterprises it is often used for storing enterprise databases which need to be kept secure and updated constantly without losing any stored data accidentally due to lack of power or connectivity issues. In consumer electronics it is often used for storing ROM (Read only Memory) files on microcontrollers used by devices such as appliances or automobiles etc., also acting as bootable drives for embedded systems like tablets and smartphones etc.
