What does NTG mean in DRUGS

Nitroglycerin is an organic compound that has been used as a medication since the 19th century. It belongs to the group of drugs known as nitrates and is commonly used to relieve chest pain caused by coronary artery spasms or angina pectoris. It also may be used to help reduce symptoms of a heart attack or congestive heart failure.

Nitroglycerin works by narrowing blood vessels in order to reduce oxygen demand on the heart, which relieves chest pain associated with angina pectoris or coronary artery spasms. Additionally, it helps increase supply of oxygen-rich blood to the myocardium or other parts of the body where it may be needed during a heart attack.

Common side effects of nitroglycerin include headache, low blood pressure, flushing, dizziness and nausea. Other serious side effects can include confusion, fast heartbeat and visual disturbances. Immediately contact your doctor if you experience any adverse side effects while taking nitroglycerin.

People who have low blood pressure or severe anemia should not take nitroglycerin due to its potential effects on their conditions. Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication as well due to lack of sufficient studies done on humans regarding use of nitroglycerin during pregnancy/breastfeeding period.

Store nitroglycerin at room temperature in its original packaging away from heat and light. Do not refrigerate or freeze this medication; doing so could cause an explosion hazard due to presence of explosive substance (glycerol trinitrate) in the medication.
