What does NSTP mean in UNCLASSIFIED

The Northern Scientific Training Program (NSTP) is a training program designed to increase scientific knowledge and capacity in Canada’s northern regions. The program provides experiential learning opportunities for students, early career researchers, professionals, Indigenous youth and adults to gain the knowledge and skills needed to pursue northern research projects or northern employment.

The NSTP generally accepts applications from Canadian residents who have been accepted into a recognized college or university, or recent graduates within the last two years of studies. It also includes early career professionals, Indigenous youth and adults, and university/college faculty members.

NSTP training typically lasts between 4 days and 6 weeks depending on what type of training you are taking part in.

During your time with the NSTP you may have the opportunity to work with local experts on research related activities such as field-based data collection, mapping exercises, resource assessments or possible laboratory project experiences relating to your field of study. There may also be additional cultural activities such as workshops with local elders or visits with indigenous community members where you can learn more about their traditional way of life.

Most of our programs take place in geographically isolated communities across Northern Canada, although there are some exceptions depending on project requirements or location availability. We offer programs throughout Nunavut, Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories as well as remote parts of Labrador and Northern Quebec.

No! All expenses associated with participating in an NSTP program are covered by us including travel expenses where applicable. All participants will also need to bring their own clothing suitable for outdoor weather conditions as well as providing their own meals while travelling within Canada.

During your time with us we will ensure that all necessary safety gear is provided as well as access to medical amenities should they be required during project activities. We will also provide regular contact points for regular updates or questions related to your experience should they arise throughout your time here.

Yes! Room and board will be provided while you are on site at any given location during your time with us unless otherwise specified beforehand depending on project activities which may require travel outside normally accessible areas.
