Design

The NRGB was designed by Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering firm based out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It consists of 17 steel arches spanning 571 meters held together by 9 million pounds of structural steel which rest on four tall concrete piers that are embedded 54 ft into the ground at their base. Its design allows for cars to move quickly and with ease over its length while also being able to endure high wind speeds up to 110 mph when fully loaded with vehicles.

Significance

The opening of the NRGB marked a major milestone for development in West Virginia as it allowed for better access between different communities that were previously separated by the large canyon-like gorge. This enabled commerce to prosper as goods could be transported from place to place much faster than before, leading to increased economic growth throughout southern West Virginia. In addition, its iconic design was featured on America's quarter in 2020 and helped provide endless amounts of inspiration for artist all over the world who sought out its shapely arches and amazing views off its platform.
