What does NMRE mean in NEUROLOGY

Neuro Muscular Re Education (NMRE) is a type of physiotherapy that uses specific techniques to improve motor control, posture and coordination.

NMRE can benefit those with impaired movement patterns due to conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy or other neurological conditions.

NMRE uses elements of neurophysiology and muscle biomechanics to restore lost motor skills. The therapist will assess the patient's neuromuscular performance, then use exercises and manual therapy approaches to improve the patient's movements.

Exercises used in NMRE typically involve low impact stretching and strengthening activities such as balance training, gait training, core stability exercises and functional tasks. However, depending on the individual's needs, other activities may be incorporated into the program such as swimming or massage therapy.

Results of NMRE will vary depending on the individual's condition and response to treatment however improved strength, balance, coordination and posture are common improvements seen with this form of therapy. Other benefits may include reduced pain levels or improved range of motion at affected joints.
