What does NMCF mean in NURSING

The Nursing and Midwifery Career Framework (NMCF) is a structured system that supports the professional development of nurses and midwives. It provides robust career pathways which recognise achievement, encouraging all healthcare professionals to strive for excellence and continuous learning throughout their careers.

The framework consists of four levels - Entry Level Nursing Practice, Nurse Practitioner, Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Specialty Practitioner - each offering increasing autonomy and recognition. There are also two additional levels - Master's Level Practice and Advanced Professional Practice - for more experienced practitioners who wish to progress their practice further.

To enter into the NMCF you must have a nursing qualification at degree level or higher, in addition to experience as a nurse or midwife. Depending on your individual experience, you may be eligible for entry at any of the four levels listed above.

No additional training is required; your professional development will be recognised through evidence of personal achievement such as written reflections on practice or individual projects. However, if you do wish to pursue additional training or qualifications, there are many modules available that can help prepare you for advancement within the framework.

The framework offers an accelerated career pathway which allows all healthcare professionals to develop their knowledge and skills while progressing through their chosen career path. Those wishing to progress to Senior Clinical Leadership positions are also encouraged through specialised programmes such as Leadership Fellowships or Executive Coaching Courses.

Through regular engagement with relevant national updates, journals and other sources of evidence-based advice/practice, it’s easy to keep up with changes in your field. Additionally, tailored professional development plans should be created that specifically identify activities that would benefit from learning/development opportunities according to current best practices in your area of expertise.

Yes! You can apply for end-point assessments (EPAs) which provide evidence of your mastery of skills/knowledge related to specific roles within healthcare settings. These assessments are assessed by independent assessors who make judgements on whether candidates meet pre-determined standards.
