Brief History of NLCL

Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited (NLCL) was incorporated in 1956 by the Government of India to exploit the lignite reserves of Neyveli discovered during 1952-53. This eventually resulted into setting up two large open cast lignite mines known as ‘Mines I’ and ‘Mine II’ in 1957 with an installed capacity to produce 3 million tonnes per year from each mine respectively. Furthermore, two thermal power plants were also established at Mines I & II with a total generating capacity of 500 MW using steam turbines fueled by lignite produced from these mines respectively.

Modern Operations

Today NLCL operates six Open Cast Mines producing about 30 million tonnes per annum. Since 2007, it has diversified into coal mining at Talabira Block – II where it has successfully extracted 1 million tonnes coals since then till present day. Additionally six Thermal Power Stations are also operational where about 8500 MW are being generated from these stations either based directly on lignite mined by them or through imported coal-fired steam turbine plant utilizing coal sourced from other domestic suppliers around India. On top of that they have also made substantial investments in renewable energy sources such as solar and wind farms down south near Andhra Pradesh apart from initiating various reclamation programmes meant for forest land restoration.
