What does NERT mean in LAW & LEGAL

NERT is a volunteer-based program that teaches people how to help themselves, their families and neighbors in the event of an emergency or disaster. It provides preparedness activities, as well as training courses such as basic disaster response skills and medical operations.

Any resident who lives within the jurisdiction of San Francisco can become a part of the NERT team. There are no specific age or educational requirements for NERT membership; anyone interested in helping out in an emergency situation can join.

In order to join a NERT team, you must complete training provided by San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD). Training typically includes basic disaster preparedness concepts, incident command system overviews, small fire suppression tactics, light search and rescue techniques, disaster psychology and terrorism awareness.

Members must attend both classroom and hands-on training sessions. They also need to maintain current certifications with refresher classes every two years. Finally, they must be available to participate in neighborhood drills and respond to emergencies when needed.

Yes, all members have access to specialized protective gear such as hard hats, gloves and goggles which each member will receive during training for use in drills and actual responses. Other materials may be purchased at additional cost such as radio communication systems or medical bags with supplies.

During the initial training sessions there are usually multiple meetings spread over several weeks on planned evenings and weekends until all requirements are met. After becoming certified most teams meet once per month for continued education or drills and occasionally more often if there is an upcoming response expected.

All local NERT teams are managed by their respective Fire Station Captains which may be contacted through SF311 Customer Service Center located at City Hall or by visiting sf-fire.org for further information on contact numbers for the station closest to them.

No fees are associated with joining or maintaining membership on your local Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT). The only costs would be for any additional items purchased beyond what is supplied by the City such as gear or communication systems.

Depending upon your availability it could be possible to join multiple teams but you must have the approval of those captains before doing so due to limited resources that each station might possess.
