History

Nehawu was born out of the merger between The South African Commercial Catering & Allied Workers' Union (SACCW) which was formed in 1917, during Apartheid-era South Africa when workers were largely denied their basic rights. An employment minister at the time took advantage of these vulnerable circumstances to create a government-unifying body called “The National Council of Trade Unions” (NCTU) which was formed in April 1989 to bring together all trade unions. NEHAWU officially came into existence on 01 July 1993 after these two organizations merged to become one powerful organization representing over 200 000 members nationwide in various public service, healthcare and transport sectors.

Mission

The mission of NEHAWU is to be a strategic leader within the broader trade union movement by organising all workers through negotiations for better wages, improved working conditions as well as representation with the employers, government departments and other organisations. Additionally, it provides quality education programmes so that its members are well informed about their rights as workers while also raising awareness on social issues which adversely impact the lives of South Africans such as poverty alleviation programmes, access to quality healthcare services etc. NEHAWU also strives to build strong alliances with political parties and civil society organisations that share common objectives towards realising social justice.
