What does NEDA mean in DISABILITY

The National Ethnic Disability Alliance (NEDA) is an alliance of organizations, service providers and individuals working together to promote the rights and inclusion of people with disability from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. It works towards a vision where all people with disability from CALD backgrounds have equitable access to health care, education, employment, housing and social justice.

NEDA's core values include human rights, social justice, respect for diversity and promoting opportunities for full participation for all Australians regardless of their culture or language background.

NEDA works to promote the rights of people from CALD backgrounds who live with disability by advocating for improved access to services, resources and supports; increasing cultural understanding in the disability sector through community education; providing research-informed support initiatives; facilitating peer support networks; hosting events across Australia; and raising awareness of the issues faced by this group.

NEDA is funded through grants from government departments, such as the Department of Health, as well as other sources including philanthropic foundations and sponsorships. NEDA also relies on donations made by its members and public supporters.

Through our advocacy program we focus on developing policy positions that promote fair treatment, access to resources and appropriate services for those living with disabilities who come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. We also work collaboratively with like-minded organisations to develop joint strategies designed to ensure greater access to justice across all levels of society.

Throughout the year NEDAD hosts numerous events aimed at increasing awareness about disability issues affecting CALD communities in Australia as well as connecting individuals who share similar experiences or interests related to these topics. Our popular annual “Disability Tax Summit” brings prominent stakeholders together with individuals affected by disability in our communities, providing an important platform for advocacy on taxation matters that impact their lives directly.

Yes! We provide a variety of educational activities such as workshops, seminars and conferences that aim to increase understanding around disability within CALD communities as well as providing practical tips on how best respond or engage effectively when it comes to accessing supports or services related to this topic area. Additionally we have produced numerous publications — available online — which address specific themes in more depth than our regular activities allow us time for doing so.
