What does NCL mean in MEDICAL PHYSICS

Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL) is a group of rare, progressive and fatal genetic disorders that affect the nervous system. It is also known as Batten disease, after Frederick Batten who first described the condition in 1903.

Symptoms vary depending on type and severity of the disorder but may include vision loss, seizures, speech and mobility problems. Other potential signs and symptoms include intellectual disability, behavioral disturbances or dementia.

NCL is an inherited disorder which can be passed from parent to child through genetic mutations. It affects both boys and girls equally across all ethnic groups worldwide.

Currently there is no cure for NCL however research continues to look at treatment options. Supportive therapies such as physical therapy are often recommended to help slow progression of symptoms and improve quality of life.

The best way to support someone living with NCL is by providing assistance with day-to-day activities such as preparing meals, helping them organize days out or providing emotional support like encouraging conversation about how they are feeling.
