What does AAU mean in SOCIETIES

The purpose of AAU is to promote and enhance higher education in all its aspects, including facilitating international cooperation, exchanging information on all aspects of university life, and encouraging social, economic and cultural development on the continent.

AAU was established in 1967 by universities and other higher education institutions from across Africa.

AAU provides support services such as research grants for scientists, scholarships for graduate students from Africa seeking advanced studies abroad; professional development seminars; professional exchanges; advocacy for higher education; management training programs; consulting services; network building activities; conferences; fellowship programs for African scholars studying at home and abroad; publication of research findings; assistance to universities developing their library systems; policy advice to governments regarding higher education issues; short courses for teaching staff in various disciplines.

Yes, membership to AAU is open only to accredited universities or other higher education institutions with a proven track record of excellence as well as a commitment to furthering the objectives of the Association. In addition, members must demonstrate financial sustainability as well as institutional governance standards acceptable to the Association.

There are many ways you can get involved with AAU! You can become a member institution by submitting an application form that meets the membership criteria outlined by the Association or you can participate in one of our many programs such as research grants or scholarship opportunities open to African students seeking advanced studies abroad. Additionally you could attend one of our seminars or conferences or take part in our fellowship program.
