NAVO was founded in April 1949 as a result of World War II, with the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty by twelve nations. The founding members were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway Portugal, United Kingdom and United States. Mission & Goals

The mission statement of NAVO outlines their goals: “to promote stability and well-being in Europe and North America; to provide collective defense against threats from outside forces; and to represent our shared values – freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law”. To accomplish these aims NAVO works towards promoting cooperation between member states on issues such as democracy building efforts; disaster relief operations; counter-terrorism efforts; enhancing security capabilities; peacekeeping operations; arms control initiatives; energy security projects; cyber-crime prevention measures; maritime transport safety initiatives; non-proliferation activities and much more.

Structure & Function

NAVO consists of three branches – the Political Council (POL), Defence Planning Committee (DPC) and Military Committee (MILCO). Each branch is responsible for different aspects of planning and carrying out the organization’s objectives. The Political Council focuses on regional security policies while DPC provides military advice for member states and MILCO coordinates military operations undertaken by its members. All decisions are made through consensus among all 29 nations in order to ensure that all member states are working together towards achieving common goals. This process can often be complex given the sheer number of member states involved but it ensures that each state has an equal say in determining policy directions within NAVO.

Role In Global Security

NAVO plays a crucial role in global security by providing collective defence against threats from external sources including terrorism or other hostile nations seeking to destabilise peace between member states. Additionally it has engaged in numerous formal collaborations such as NATO–Russia Council or Partnership for Peace allowing it to contribute meaningfully towards ensuring stability both regionally as well as internationally through various initiatives such as active participation in peacekeeping operations around the world or providing support for conflict resolution efforts where necessary.
