History
NAVO was founded in April 1949 as a result of World War II, with the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty by twelve nations. The founding members were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway Portugal, United Kingdom and United States. Since its establishment NAVO has grown to include 29 countries across Europe and North America.

The mission statement of NAVO outlines their goals: “to promote stability and well-being in Europe and North America; to provide collective defense against threats from outside forces; and to represent our shared values – freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law”.
