What does MUGA mean in LABORATORY

MUGA stands for Multiple-Gated Acquisition. It is a medical imaging technology used to help diagnose and monitor certain heart conditions.

A MUGA scan measures the amount of blood ejected from the left ventricle of the heart in each beat, producing detailed images that allow doctors to accurately assess the size, shape and motion of the heart.

Patients who have been diagnosed with a potentially dangerous or life-threatening heart condition may be referred for a MUGA scan in order to monitor their health over time. Other patients may receive this type of imaging if they are at risk of developing a serious heart condition.

Generally speaking, you will be asked to change into hospital clothes before being positioned on an imaging table that moves during your appointment. You should avoid eating or drinking for several hours prior to your appointment; however, you can continue taking prescribed medications leading up to your visit. You will also need to remain still during the exam since movement can cause blurry images.

The radiation exposure associated with having this type of imaging is generally considered low but increases with follow-up exams over time; therefore it is important to discuss any potential risks with your doctor prior to getting any type of radiological test or procedure done.
