History

The Montour Railroad Company was founded in 1877 by two entrepreneurs from Ohio – Charles Sibley of Youngstown and Henry Hice of Steubenville. Their vision was to link communities along the Ohio river with Chicago via Pittsburgh. The railroad quickly became known as the “Montour Line” due to the fact that it crossed through nine rural towns within Montgomery County, Pennsylvania including Bridgeville, Canonsburgand Cecil Township. In 1900, the Montour Line extended south into West Virginia connecting Mannington and Pine Grove. In 1906, the line was acquired by the Pere Marquette Railroad who operated it until 1941 when it was once again sold to another railway company which eventually merged with CSX Corporation.

Modern Use

Today’s modern MTR is used primarily for shipping coal from eastern Ohio mines to several western counties in Pennsylvania such as Beaver County where power plants are located. The railroad also carries lumber from Centralia, IL to Pacific Junction on the Monongahela River; scrap metal from Akron and Warren to Butler; grain cars from grain elevators along Lake Erie; general merchandise shipments between Youngstown and East Liberty Station; paper products; and petroleum products such as ethanol from Hammond Refinery near Salem, OH to Monongalia Power Plants near Morgantown WV. It also provides rail switching services for local industries such as steel mills, chemical plants, manufacturing sites and other industrial facilities throughout western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio areas served by CSX Corporation via their MTR division or other lease agreements with local industries such as Alliance Coal or Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.
