What does MTM mean in ACADEMIC DEGREES

A Master of Tropical Medicine (MTM) is a degree program designed to prepare professionals with an understanding of tropical diseases and how best to diagnose and treat them. The MTM can be taken at universities located all around the world in areas such as Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Courses taken towards a Master of Tropical Medicine will cover topics from epidemiology and public health to clinical management, parasitology and vectors & vectors biology. Depending on what program you choose to pursue, you may also have exposure to wet lab work or clinical experience regarding tropical infections.

Depending on which school you are interested in completing your degree with, there may be some special requirements. Generally speaking however most schools require applicants to have previous academic experience in an area related to their chosen field such as medical sciences or public health. Some programs may also include language proficiency requirement depending upon where they are located.

Most MTM programs typically take between twelve months up to two years depending upon individual factors such as course load being studied or need for research projects or clinical rotations.

Upon completion of this degree one has the skillsets necessary for positions within global health organizations focusing on research initiatives targeting leishmaniasis or malaria control programs etc., hospital based positions regarding epidemiology or infection control divisions, professorship at various universities teaching about infectious diseases affecting developing countries etc., roles in medical sales delivering medications and support services or greater roles coordinating NGOs fighting against malaria or other infectious diseases that are common throughout poorer parts of the world.
