What is MSDE?

MSDE stands for Microsoft's Standard Database Engine, which is an embedded version of SQL Server designed for applications that require small datasets and low levels of concurrent queries or transactions. It was initially released in 1998 as a replacement for Jet Red 2.5, which had become too slow or unreliable when dealing with larger datasets. Like SQL Server, MSDE supports mostSQL standards including ANSI SQL92 compliant commands and stored procedures. It also allows developers to make use of Transact-SQL (T-SQL), the proprietary programming language developed by Microsoft for querying and manipulating data in its databases. Features Of MSDE: The features included with MSDE are similar to those of other SQL Servers but are limited by its smaller footprint compared to full versions like Enterprise or Standard editions. These features allow developers to design user interfaces, control access rights to data within the database, set up replication options between multiple servers and more. Although it lacks some of the features that come standard with full versions of SQL Server (such as support for linked servers), it still offers powerful functionality at a much lower cost than other solutions available on the market today. Limitations Of MSDE: Even though it offers considerable benefits over other databases available on the market today, there are several limitations associated with MSDE that should be taken into account when developing applications using it as your back-end solution. The main limitation is that it does not support certain advanced technologies such as multi-dimensional cubes or server clusters; this means that you cannot scale your application across multiple machines if needed. Additionally, since this product is only available through certain Microsoft programs such as Visual Studio Professional Edition 2008 or later – you will not be able to purchase a standalone version of this engine directly from Microsoft without purchasing these programs first. Furthermore, technically speaking – the product will cease being supported after April 12th 2019 so care must be taken when building production systems using this technology after that date.
