Meaning

Mariupol (MPW) is a significant seaport and industrial city located in southeastern Ukraine, on the north-western shore of the Sea of Azov. The city was founded by Russian Empress Catherine the Great in 1778 and has since become a major port and commercial hub for multiple industries such as shipping, engineering, steel production, petrochemicals and chemical production. In addition to this role as an important industrial center, Mariupol also boasts a number of cultural attractions including historic sites such as St Nicholas Cathedral dating back to 1824, Shevchenko Park, Victory Square and a number of museums celebrating local history and culture.

History

The first recorded settlement in what would later become known as Mariupol dates back to around 12th century AD when it was inhabited by Cimmerians followed by Scythians prior to coming under control of Russian Empire during 16th century AD. Following this it once again became part of Russia in 1778 when Empress Catherine the Great established her newest port city here following her conquest over Crimea several years earlier than that. After Russian Revolution it became part of Soviet Union until eventually becoming Ukrainian territory after dissolution of USSR following fall of communist governments across Eastern Europe. Nowadays Mariupol plays important role both economically (as aforementioned) but also politically being gateway between pro-Russian separatists region further east known as Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) and rest of Ukrainian mainland controlled by Kiev government.

Significance

Mariupol (MPW) remains an important economic hub within eastern Ukraine both through its longstanding industrial base as well as serving online trading/shipping purposes due to its port facilities located on northern coast adjacent to sea itself currently handling several million tons worth freight annually being used across globe amongst other things export sales from steel mills surrounding region supplying companies worldwide with product while also offering lucrative job opportunities those living nearby which not only help put food tables but provides citizens much needed stability during trying times chaos gripping country since 2014 following successful pro-Western revolution briefly resulting formation new government point then reverted takeover former president Viktor Yanukovych ultimately sparking civil war still occurring today with direct consequences felt inhabitants vicinity recent bullet holes seen street dividers throughout town increasing presence military personnel going about business usual otherwise solemn atmosphere reminding locals daily hardships continuously facing citizens during time crisis.
