What does MPN mean in THERAPY

MPN stands for myeloproliferative neoplasm. It is a group of chronic and progressive diseases of the blood and bone marrow caused by the overproduction of one or more types of blood cells.

Symptoms associated with MPN may include fatigue, bruising easily, night sweats, fever, heavy menstrual periods in women, increased infections, loss of appetite and weight loss.

To diagnose MPN your doctor may order a physical exam, blood test to determine if there is an increase in certain white blood cells or platelets as well as imaging tests such as x-rays or CT scans to look for any signs of abnormal growths in the bone marrow.

Treatment options for people with MPN may include medication to reduce symptoms such as painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs, chemotherapy to kill off abnormal cells or radiation therapy to shrink enlarged organs due to excess cell production. In some cases a stem cell transplant can also be used.

Unfortunately there is no cure for many forms of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). However they can often be managed through treatment options such as medications or stem cell transplants so that patients can live relatively normal lives.
