What Is ARL?

Animal Refuge League (ARL) was founded in 1975 by a small group of animal lovers who wanted to help animals who had been abandoned or neglected. Their mission was to provide temporary care, medical treatment, rehabilitation services, adoption services, and permanent placement of animals in suitable homes. Today, ARL continues its mission of helping animals in need. They provide shelter services such as adoption events and foster programs as well as offering low-cost spay/neuter services. ARL also works with local law enforcement agencies to address animal cruelty cases and offers assistance to those in need through their pet food pantry programs.

History Of ARL

ARL has grown significantly since its inception in 1975. In the early years of their existence, they operated mainly in Portland and surrounding communities but eventually expanded their reach throughout Maine. In 1995, they opened a wildlife center dedicated exclusively to helping wild animals injured or orphaned due to humans’ activities or irresponsible human behavior towards them. By 2015, they had opened multiple shelters throughout Maine including Scarborough Shelter & Wildlife Center which now houses over 250 cats annually along with feral cats waiting forever homes; Westbrook Shelter & Adoption Center which houses nearly 100 cats yearly plus adoption dogs; Auburn Shelter which has over 300 cats yearly plus adoptable dogs; Topsham Shelter where nearly 200 cats are helped each year plus adoptable dogs; Windham Shelter housing around 200 cats each year plus adoptable dogs; Waterville Kennel & Cattery offering adoptable bird species; Skowhegan Kennel showcasing several dozen adoptable canine pets annually; SacoVille Cattery housing more than a hundred felines each year; Belfast Cat House catering especially for cat adoption needs annualy – among others!
