What does MPC mean in NEWS & MEDIA

The Manitoba Press Council (MPC) is an independent, public-service organization that exists to ensure accountability and promote freedom of the press in the province of Manitoba. It provides a professional dispute resolution service to address complaints about print media content as defined by its Constitution. The MPC also educates journalists, publishers, advertisers and citizens about ethical journalism and their rights and responsibilities with respect to content produced by newspapers, magazines and other news sources in Manitoba.

The MPC is able to investigate complaints about accuracy, fairness, balance, invasion of privacy or copyright infringement related to stories published in Manitoba print news outlets including newspapers, magazines and booklets.

The MPC does not review online articles at this time. Complaints must relate directly to print material from a Manitoba source.

Complaints should be submitted via mail or email using the official complaint form located on the MPC website. Before submitting a complaint, you must read carefully through all relevant information regarding filing procedures outlined on the website.

You are encouraged to attach your name or contact details when filing a complaint so that we may reach out if additional information is required. However, you are not required to identify yourself if you prefer to remain anonymous throughout the process.

All complaints will be reviewed by an editor or publisher appointed by the publication where your complaint originates from. They will provide an initial response within 10 business days outlining their own complaint resolution process or responding directly to your concerns if applicable. If you are unsatisfied with this response you may move forward with a formal complaint through our office which will be reviewed by our independent adjudication panel.

No - There is no cost associated with submitting your complaint through our office; lawyer's fees may apply depending on how much third-party involvement is required throughout the investigation process but these expenses would not be charged directly by MPC itself.

Each case varies depending on its complexity but most cases receive resolution within six months of filing. In some cases resolution may take longer than six months due to specific challenges encountered during investigations that require extended research or expert opinion before final decisions can be made.
