What does ARIN mean in DOMAIN NAMES

ARIN stands for American Registry of Internet Numbers. It is a nonprofit organization that manages the distribution and registration of IP addresses and other internet number resources in North America, to ensure the stability and growth of the Internet.

ARIN is managed by a Board of Trustees composed of individuals from across the North American Internet community, including members from both private industry as well as public interest organizations.

The primary function of ARIN is to manage the allocation and assignment of IP addresses and other associated number resources within its service area which includes Canada, many Caribbean and North Atlantic islands, and the United States.

In order to ensure fairness, accuracy and efficiency when allocating IP addresses, ARIN has adopted a multi-phase system that involves 1) validating need, 2) issuing assignments/allocations to meet demonstrated needs, 3) verifying operational use after issuance, 4) recognizing transfers between qualified entities 5) assisting in resolving inter-RIR disputes 6) revoking unused allocations/assignments.

In addition to providing address space management services, ARIN also provides technical assistance such as a Directory Services program that allows users to search for domain ownership information; online registration services for organizations applying for address space or reassigning existing numbers; an automated provisioning system for ISPs with large amounts of network requests; an automated resource request system for ISPs requesting smaller amounts of networks; and support programs such as training seminars and outreach campaigns.

Requests are typically processed within 48 hours after they have been submitted. However, due to increased demand or technical problems there can be delays beyond this timeframe.
