What does ARI mean in HOSPITALS

An Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is an infection in the upper or lower respiratory tract, usually caused by a virus.

Common symptoms of an ARI include cough, fever, sore throat, runny nose, headache and body aches. In some cases, other symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain and difficulty breathing may occur.

Treatment for an ARI varies depending on its severity and the underlying cause. Resting at home and drinking plenty of fluids are usually recommended for mild cases. Over-the-counter medications may also help to alleviate symptoms such as fever and pain. More severe cases may require medical intervention, including antibiotics or hospitalization.

Practicing good hygiene habits is key in preventing an ARI. This includes washing your hands regularly with soap and water; avoiding close contact with people who have colds; covering your nose and mouth when sneezing; and cleaning surfaces frequently with a disinfectant solution approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Additionally, getting adequate sleep, eating healthy foods, exercising regularly and managing stress levels may also help prevent illness.

If you experience worsening symptoms such as increasing fever or difficulty breathing; if your symptoms do not improve after several days; or if you develop additional symptoms like chest pain or confusion then it is important that you seek medical attention right away as these could indicate a more serious underlying condition.
