What Does MN Mean?

MN is most often used as an abbreviation for the state of Minnesota. It has also occasionally been used within specific governmental organizations such as The State Department. Additionally, some businesses also use MN to represent their state of origin.

Origin of MN

Minnesota became a state on May 11th, 1858 and was the 32nd U.S. state admitted into the Union at that time. The name “Minnesota” derives from a Native American word meaning “sky-tinted water” or “cloudy water” – which could certainly describe the many lakes throughout the landlocked state!

The abbreviation ‘MN’ actually predates its use as an acronym for Minnesota however; it has been suggested that it originally stood for “Minneapolis & St Paul Railroad” - two cities located on either side of the Mississippi River which form part of what is now commonly referred to as the Twin Cities metropolitan area!

Use of MN in Governmental Settings

In governmental settings, MN is primarily used to refer to Minnesota in both written documents and maps.
