MMCBEs provide technical guidance to personnel performing a variety of tasks such as repairing machinery and engines; maintaining shipboard systems; operating saws, drills, mills, lathes, grinders, and other heavy industrial equipment; installing repair parts; troubleshooting breakdowns; supervising deck maintenance operations; conducting work assignments in support of transportation services; overseeing major repairs to operational vessels; and participating in salvage operations. They also serve as watchstanders in control rooms during underway replenishments, anchoring/mooring evolutions and other related bridge activities. In addition to these duties aboard ship or shoreside locations, Machinist's Mates also perform quality assurance inspections on all material that must be purchased from outside vendors.
