What does ARD mean in DISEASES

Adult Refsum Disease (ARD) is a rare inherited metabolic disorder that is caused by an abnormal accumulation of phytanic acid in the body. It primarily affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60.

Common symptoms of ARD include vision loss, hearing loss, balance problems, muscle weakness, peripheral neuropathy, cognitive impairment and memory problems. Other symptoms may include heart arrhythmias and high cholesterol levels.

ARD can be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are often similar to those seen in other diseases such as diabetes or thyroid disorders. Diagnosis usually involves a combination of genetic testing, physical examination and laboratory tests such as blood tests and urine tests to measure levels of phytanic acid.

Treatment for ARD includes lifestyle changes such as reducing dietary intake of phytanic acid-containing foods, supplementing with vitamin A, E and D vitamins; taking medications such as allopurinol or penicillamine; using raw thymus extract; and undergoing gene therapy.

Currently there is no known way to prevent ARD since it is caused by a genetic mutation; however individuals who have a family history of this disorder should seek advice from their doctor on ways they can reduce their risk factors for developing it as well as how to best manage any existing symptoms they may have.
