Bougainville is an autonomous region of Papua New Guinea, located in the South Pacific Ocean, and has been a part of the independent nation since 1975. In 1997, an armed conflict erupted between the Autonomous Bougainville Government and the central government of Papua New Guinea which lasted nearly ten years. Following the conclusion of this insurgency, a peace agreement was signed in 2001 that granted Bougainville significant autonomy within PNG. This was followed by two subsequent referendums in 2019 and 2020 which resulted in Bougainville achieving its independence. This independence was formalized with the establishment of ARoB on 1 May 2021.
