What does MGPS mean in UNCLASSIFIED

The MGPS program at the University of Texas is an interdisciplinary master's degree program designed to train students in their knowledge and skills necessary to become a global policy leader. It combines courses from various departments, such as political science, economics, international relations, and public policy, to provide a comprehensive academic experience. MGPS students study both domestic and international law, foreign languages, international trade and finance negotiations, security issues, diplomacy, sustainability and climate change.

To be admitted into the MGPS Program applicants must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or equivalent. Students must also submit a statement of purpose describing their academic goals and career aspirations as well as two letters of recommendation from professional referees who can speak to the applicant’s abilities and character.

Some core course topics offered include global public health systems, international economics and development studies, global environmental governance and diplomacy as well as regional courses on Southeast Asian Studies or African studies. The course syllabus also includes seminars on leadership strategies for cross-cultural interaction along with understanding human rights instruments. Additionally there are electives available in conflict analysis resolution or peacekeeping operations among others.

Generally it takes full-time students two years—or four semesters—to complete their studies in the MGPS Program. Part-time students can complete it over five years according to the normal length of individual classes while taking breaks between semesters if needed.

Yes! As part of its curriculum requirement every student will have to undertake a practicum experience related to their field of study either domestically or internationally which will be conducted in collaboration with relevant partners such as NGOs or government agencies. Additionally each student is strongly encouraged to participate in an internship abroad with one of UT’s international partner organizations during their studies.

During their final semester each student will work on a capstone project that requires them to make use of analytical methods gained through classroom instruction while conducting field visits in order to analyze real-world policies for addressing global issues such as poverty reduction initiatives or fostering economic integration among countries.
